June 02 - Lunch at the Globe: Pat Burns & Jim Lorriman

Pat and Jim will again tantalize us with their art and reveal plans for two outstanding shows that will be held at the Dufferin County Museum & Archives (DCMA).

Pat Burns will talk about the second Stitches Across Time Exhibition (September 12 - November 9, 2014), a celebration of the skills of Canadian weavers and fabric artists from across Canada.

She will also reveal details of a fashion show/lunch to be held on September 21 at the DCMA.

Jim Lorriman will also open a show at the DCMA on September 12 (running until October 26).

The show is entitled History in the Making. Jim will show works where he has used pieces of wood with a past that tell stories of their uses many years ago. One of the Byford treasures is a set of bowls created from the wood of our original house.

Jim’s great gift to Theatre Orangeville was a selection of wood serving dishes crafted from the old seats of the theatre.

May 05 - Lunch at the Globe: Ellen Cole

“To come or not to come – that is the question.”

Our speaker, Ellen Cole, will tell us some of the interesting inside stories associated with running a theatre company producing the plays of William Shakespeare.

Ellen spent eight  years in the administration of the Royal Shakespeare Company in the United Kingdom and four years with Canada’s Stratford Festival.

April 07 - Lunch at The Globe: Leaders of the Dufferin Youth Festival of the Arts

We are pleased to welcome the leaders of the Dufferin Youth Festival of the Arts. They have listened to and acted upon their challenge.

The Festival is not a competition. It’s a celebration for young people throughout the County to

meet and enjoy each other’s art – be it dance, music, painting, or poetry. What an idea! Enjoy. Be happy!

In the words of one participant, “I loved the festival. It was the best day ever! I hope I go next year!” (Grade 3 student at Parkinson C.P.S.)

March 03 - Lunch at the Globe with Jim Coyle, Journalist

Journalist Jim Coyle has been a writer for several major newspapers in Canada. He has worked for Canadian Press covering politics at Queen’s Park and in Ottawa and is currently working for the Toronto Star. Throughout his career, Jim has written on a wide range of topics. 

His abilities have earned him the trust and respect of many politicians, understanding as he does the pressures and subtleties of public office. 

Another thing to know about Jim is that he is the son-in-law of Pater Gordon and the husband of feature writer Andrea Gordon, also of the Peter Gordon Clan.

February 3: Globe Luncheon TBA

The Globe Luncheon on February 03rd will be announced shortly, but in the meantime, did you know:

The Globe Hotel, one of the few early inns still to be seen in Ontario, was built on a Crown Land grant in the 1830′s. The present building, dating from 1859, was one of four hotels in Rosemont, which at that time was a larger community than Alliston. It served as a local pub, and also as a stopping point for the stage coach. It played host to travellers, salesmen, and even Fenian and other political gatherings. Prohibition in 1919 curbed its legal activities, but it still accepted overnight guests until 1955. A century has altered its outward appearance only a little from the original solid, no-nonsense attitude, it represented. The interior has now been restored and once again the old dining room welcomes guests with an early Ontario ‘Bill of Fare’.

December 02 - Globe Luncheon with Joseph & the Technical Dreamcoat

 

Dufferin County is blessed with great talented young people - actors, artists, musicians, and singers - AND they are part of what we in DAC believe in and support. 

 

Two of these recent stars of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat will hopefully perform for us. These talented young people and others brought chills to Pat and Gary Vipond when they heard them perform in Orangeville. 

 

“Dick”, they said, “you have to invite them to one of our luncheons!”

November 4 - Globe Luncheon with Quilting “Dufferin Treasures”

Quilting is an art form which also has a history to tell. The Dufferin County Museum & Archives (DCMA) is in the process of publishing a history of Dufferin County quilting dating back to the 1800s. 

 

Each one of these quilts reveals the fantastic skills their makers possessed, as well as details about the people who put the quilts together. My favourite is the Grand Valley quilt. The ladies of that community worked together to create this quilt in response to the Red Cross’ request for blankets for the field hospitals during WW I. How the quilt was returned to Dufferin County is an amazing story. Come to lunch to hear the details! This quilt brings tears to my eyes - showing, as it does, the love and anguish in its stitches.

Steve Brown and Shelagh Roberts will display some of the other quilts the Museum possesses. By November, the Museum hopes to have completed its brilliant book on the quilts of Dufferin County.

October 7 - Globe Luncheon with David Ivens, Silversmith

October 7: David Ivens, Internationally Known and Award-Winning Silversmith

David trained as a silversmith in the traditional methods, having studied in Europe and across North America. Among his many activities, David has been teaching silversmithing, forging and metal forming at several community colleges.

 

This past spring, David’s exhibition at the AGO earned rave reviews. These works will be shown at the DCMA as part of the Silver Anniversary weekend (November 16 and 17). 

 

Prior to that, David will bring some of his beautiful pieces to the luncheon as well as some of his collection of smithing tools. He will tantalize us with photos of silver that we can only dream of owning. David will reveal his techniques and help us to understand what he has to do to make his wonderful creations. 

 

Some of his recent achievements include: Best Holloware Goblet, Ritual Goblet Exhibition; Beth Tzedec, 2010; Cheongiu International Craft Biennale 2009 Exhibitor; 60th Anniversary Metal Arts Guild Show, Judges’ Choice Award.

June 03 - DAC Luncheon with Erica Pratt

June 3: Erica Pratt, Volunteer Extraordinaire, Traveller, and Photographer

Before Erica leaves for an extended working trip to Cambodia to expand on her previous work as an “accidental” English teacher, she will tantalize us with some of her photographs of South East Asia. 

Erica claims to be only an amateur photographer, but she is much, much more. Her experiences with a little school and young children in Cambodia have become a passion that have drawn her back to that country. 

According to Judy Lansing, her photos are incredible. Erica’s volunteer experience at Nellie’s and Jessie’s in Toronto stimulated her to get involved at the Orangeville Hospital and the lovely old St. Andrew’s Church in Caledon.

May 6: Karen Minden, Founder of the Pine River Institute

Karen has created a miracle in Dufferin County - the envy of people who work with adolescents around the world.

Margaret Wente, in The Globe and Mail, says it is a must for you to learn about in 2013. Besides becoming one of Mulmur Township’s largest employers, Karen has built a staff and program that has literally saved the lives of hundreds of young people who have had difficulties with substance abuse, emotional and physical challenges, and alienation.

The Dufferin Arts Council has played a part in this success as our artists and storytellers have worked with these young people. Art is a powerful tool that can change lives!

This is an incredible story. Parents can’t believe the changes in their adolescent’s lives. The waiting list is long as the success of the program speaks for itself.

Arctic voyageur, ceramicist, and community supporter par excellence, Al Pace has spoken several times at our luncheons. This time he will focus on the impact of the Arctic on his art and tie in how his Canoe North Adventures with his wife, Lin Ward, give people a view of the artistic beauty of the northern rivers.

January 7 - Lunch at The Globe with Anthony Jenkins

Anthony Jenkins is a new resident of Mono and has quickly become involved in our arts community. His work will soon appear in the windows of Dragonfly. It is through Joan Hope that he has agreed to speak to us at lunch. 

Anthony Jenkins has been an editorial cartoonist, caricaturist, illustrator, and sometime writer at The Globe and Mail for so many decades it is embarrassing; almost four, but who’s counting. He loves the human face and has never tired in finding interest, beauty, character and art in it. He catches a likeness elegantly or on (merited) occasions, cruelly, and always with attention to an interesting, dancing line. He has, at intervals over those decades, also traveled in 83 countries, on all continents save Antarctica, sketching and drawing in the streets, markets, mountains and savannahs, even when he is not being paid.

Dec 3 - DAC Luncheon with David & Sandra Pomeroy: Music & Opera

David Pomeroy, a Newfoundlander by birth, now lives in Orangeville where Sandra, his wife, a wonderful musician in her own right, teaches music to some lucky students. David recently had the title role in Les Comtes d'Hoffman at the Met.

David is performing at the Orangeville Opera House in April 2013 as part of the concert series. And, as luck would have it, David is home in December to sing The Messiah and has graciously agreed to join us at The Globe. Sonia Close is ecstatic! Thanks for insisting!
